Halt Out-of-State Land Purchases and Over-Development in Colorado
The Issue
As a local citizen, I have seen the devastating effects of rampant land development in our beloved cities of Colorado. Our open spaces and stunning views of the mountains are increasingly blocked off by high-rise apartments. Wildlife, once a common and joyful sight, is now more often seen injured or killed on the side of the road due to increasing traffic and development. Noise and litter have dramatically spiked alongside criminal activities. Our city has lost its unique identity and resemblance to California continues to grow.
Our officials, supposed guardians of our prosperity and welfare, seem more concerned about accumulating wealth than preserving the beauty and integrity of our city. Our concern is not simply aesthetic: rapid urbanization is making living conditions worse and driving up the cost of living. Farmers, the backbone of our local economy, are being pushed out, causing food cost inflation.
Recent reports show that development in our state has led to a whopping 150% increase in traffic congestion over the last decade and a 30% increase in crime rates (State Data Center). Perhaps even more alarmingly, we are seeing a rapid decline in biodiversity, with several species now classified as endangered due to habitat encroachment.
By halting out-of-state land purchases and putting a stop to over-development, we can help save our rural areas, protect wildlife, and preserve the quality of life for all residents. We urge our governor and city mayors to listen to the natives of Colorado and act now. There will be nothing left for our children if we don’t take a stand. Please sign the petition to stop the unchecked development and protect Colorado.
