The Issue

As residents of the city of Hemet, California, we have been graced with a peaceful, small-town environment. However, our way of life is under threat by five proposed mega-warehouse developments. These mega-warehouses totaling approximately 6.8 million square feet are to be constructed in our small town,  adjacent to residential zones, avian flyways and proximate to a senior retirement community.

An increase in warehouse operations brings with it hundreds of diesel trucks making daily rounds. Many of our community members already suffer from debilitating lung and heart conditions. The significant rise in air pollution due to truck activities is likely to worsen these health issues and may even result in residents' premature death.

It's not only people who are in danger. In 2004, Audubon California identified the “San Jacinto Valley Important Bird Area” (IBA) to draw attention to the exceptional bird habitats present in the valley, whose main habitats include alkali scrub, constructed wetlands (both permanent and seasonal), irrigated fields, and riparian habitats. In 2010, Audubon elevated the valley to an IBA of “global significance” due to the resident breeding population of Tricolored Blackbirds here. Migrating birds overwinter in our valley making this one of the most important fly-ways in the world.

Furthermore, such large-scale construction and industrial operations will inevitably alter the quiet, community-focused lifestyle we now enjoy. Mega-warehouses can overshadow the small businesses that contribute to the spirit and economy of our town. They bring not just pollution, but traffic, noise, and a fundamental change in the character of our community.

Arterial roads such as Florida, Sanderson, Warren, Kirby and Cawston will be seriously impacted, impeding fire, ambulance and police services.

We call upon the Office of the City Planner to reconsider these proposed warehouse projects as Hemet's small town charm and the well-being of its residents and wildlife are at stake. We implore them to factor in not just economic considerations but also our health, our community, our scenic beauty and our very way of life. We request health and environmental impact assessments conducted by unbiased third parties before any further steps are taken.

Please join us in our fight against these mega-warehouse developments. Your signature can help us ensure the health and tranquillity of Hemet city. Sign this petition today.
