The Chickadee Trail runs through one of the wildest, biodiverse, and lush areas of Stanley Park. It's a paradise of ferns, moist soil, hemlocks, firs, and cedars.
The City of Vancouver plans to plow through what it obliviously labels the "Chickadee Treatment Area" as early as September, 2024 and do what it did to Prospect Point and other areas of Stanley Park; that is, chop down swaths of trees leaving piles of slash, overturned and drying soil, disturbed root systems of nearby remaining trees, and wind tunnels.
The City behaves this way because it subscribes to antiquated mythology promoted by the forest industry which suggests that thinning forests reduces fire hazard. This has been debunked by contemporary scientific research. For example, read this:
The Impact of Fuel Thinning on the Microclimate in Coastal Rainforest Stands of Southwestern British Columbia, Canada
On September 16th, 2024 we will be arguing before a judge of the Supreme Court of British Columbia that the logging of Stanley Park should be temporarily halted until our lawsuit can come to trial.
