The Chickadee Trail runs through one of the wildest, biodiverse, and lush areas of Stanley Park. It's a paradise of ferns, moist soil, hemlocks, firs, and cedars.

The City of Vancouver plans to plow through what it obliviously labels the "Chickadee Treatment Area" as early as September, 2024 and do what it did to Prospect Point and other areas of Stanley Park; that is, chop down swaths of trees leaving piles of slash, overturned and drying soil, disturbed root systems of nearby remaining trees, and wind tunnels.

Many experts from diverse disciplnes such as forestry, ecology, conervations science, and arboriculture have surveyed Stanley Park in recent weeks. Here is a small sampling of their opinions:

"The Stanley Park Hemlock Looper Impact & Wildfire Risk Assessment attempts to address two concerns: 1) risk of wildfire, 2) windfall (blowdown) risk to human safety and infrastructure. I have found that the risk of wildfire is very low and risk of windfall has not been altered by the intervention logging that has taken place to date."

"Opening the Stanley Park’s forest stands only increases the risk of future wind-throw (blowdown), especially given the Park’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and wind being the main natural disturbance agent in Stanley Park."

"There is substantial damage to the Parks’ ecosystems already from the treatments that appear far worse and with much longer lasting than the looper infestation. Those are chronic disturbances that will reverberate negatively through the Parks’ ecosystems for decades, especially the removal of large trees that take centuries to replace. Simply planting tiny seedlings is no replacement for the loss of centuries old trees from logging."
