Halt Lexisnexis and Similar Companies from Distributing Private Information Freely

The Issue

I am one of many Americans who have been negatively impacted by the free distribution of private information by companies like Lexisnexis & RELX. This is not just a personal issue, but a major privacy concern that affects us all. The financial implications are real and far-reaching, some visible and others hidden.

Lexisnexis, among other data brokerage firms, has access to vast amounts of our personal data - from public records to our online activities. They compile this information into detailed profiles which they sell to businesses, government agencies or anyone willing to pay for it. According to a report by the World Privacy Forum, there are at least 4000 data brokers worldwide with revenues exceeding $200 billion annually (World Privacy Forum's Report on Data Brokers).

This unregulated sharing of private information poses significant risks including identity theft and fraud. In 2019 alone, there were 14 million victims of identity theft in the U.S., resulting in over $1.7 billion in out-of-pocket costs (Insurance Information Institute). Countless Americans are being affected unknowingly and wherever these companies operate, are inflating costs!  https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/your-car-may-be-collecting-driving-data-for-insurance-companies-heres-how/ar-BB1kLvwp

We need stricter regulations on how these companies can access and handle our private information. It's time we take back control over our own data.

I urge you to sign this petition demanding legislation that restricts companies like Lexisnexis from freely accessing and distributing private information without explicit written and readable consent in a simple laymans form individuals involved. Not a generalized privacy statement to click and proceed. Let's stand together for privacy rights!

Update: in lieu of a fight ahead RELX has hired a strong lobbyist to fight against your privacy https://www.politico.com/newsletters/politico-influence/2024/04/04/lexisnexis-parent-company-lobbied-up-amid-fisa-fight-00150669  They know what they are doing is wrong!
