Halt Hotel Construction at Neyland Stadium
The Issue
Contracts may have been signed and money may have changed hands but it’s not over until the hotel is built.
Neyland Stadium is more than just a sports arena; it’s a symbol of pride and tradition for the volunteers and the whole city of Knoxville. Every fall, this historic landmark becomes the heartbeat of our community, its iconic structure standing as a testament to the spirit of Tennessee Volunteers and the fans who flock to experience the electrifying atmosphere inside.
Now, this beautiful and revered site faces a looming threat—the construction of a large hotel right next to it. This project will not only alter the beloved landscape around Neyland Stadium, but it will also detract from the unique and majestic presence that Neyland holds in our city's heart. The hotel will impose a towering urban feel onto what is now a harmonious blend of collegial tradition and natural views, fundamentally changing the experience for fans and visitors who cherish the spacious approach to the stadium entrance.
Beyond the visual impact, significant concerns exist about increased traffic congestion, parking issues, sun glare, and disruptions on game days. During events, the influx of vehicles already challenges the existing infrastructure. Adding a hotel could exacerbate these problems, leading to extended delays, making it harder for fans and local residents to access the stadium and UT’s campus as a whole. Additional concern has been raised regarding the sun’s reflection and how it will affect players and fans in the stadium. This project has prompted frustration amongst upperclassmen who have limited housing and parking options. Why are visitors, specifically the wealthy, more important?
We urge the decision-makers to rethink this project. Let’s explore alternatives that protect the essence of Neyland Stadium. Moving the hotel to a different location, or redesigning the project to be less intrusive (smaller with an aesthetic to match the rest of campus), are potential avenues to explore.
We want future generations to experience the same awe at Neyland Stadium’s sight, knowing that our community stood together to preserve its surroundings. Please join us in protecting the integrity and majesty of this treasured landmark. Sign this petition to stop the construction of the hotel next to Neyland Stadium.
