Halt Hecla Mining Company's Expansion in Keno

Halt Hecla Mining Company's Expansion in Keno
The Issue
For over a century Keno City has been a service hub for miners and the mining industry. As one of the few remaining business owners left in Keno, I am witnessing firsthand the devastating impact of current mining policies on our community. This once thriving town, the Jewel of the Silver Trail , known for its rich history and natural beauty, is now suffering from the contamination of its local community water supply, industrial levels of dust and noise, and the crippling of a once vibrant tourism industry. In 2009 a five year temporary portable mill was permitted at its present location on the edge of town. Sixteen years later, the mill is still here and Hecla Mining Co. has proposed expanding the mill and tailings footprint even further onto government land previously uncontaminated by mining operations. The proposed tailings expansion is on high ground sloping down to the Crystal Lake water system.
The Yukon Department of Energy, Mines and Resources holds the power to halt further destruction. By placing a moratorium on any expansion of the present mill and mine tailings footprint at Keno, and by initiating a comprehensive study to identify a more suitable permanent site for these operations, government can preserve Keno's long standing place in Yukon history working hand in hand with the mining community.
Hecla Mining Company's expansion is not only risking the health and well-being of Keno's residents , it significantly impacts the wildlife corridors between the Duncan Creek and McQuesten valleys. This the pristine natural environment that draws tourists to the Yukon in the first place.
Sign this petition to urge the Yukon Department of Energy, Mines and Resources to impose this critical moratorium and lead the way towards sustainable mining practices that respect the legacy of Keno City.
Your support is vital in reversing these damaging trends. Sign the petition today to stand with Keno and preserve its future.
