I am an Atlanta resident deeply invested in the future of our city. The current plan to construct Ga400 express lanes is not only costly but also lacks foresight. We need a solution that will truly address the transportation needs of our growing population, and expanding Marta is that solution.

Marta, our public transit system, has been serving Atlanta since 1971. It has proven to be a reliable mode of transportation for many residents who rely on it daily for their commute. However, its reach is limited and there are still many areas in Atlanta that are not serviced by Marta.

On the other hand, constructing more express lanes on Ga400 will only encourage more car usage which leads to increased traffic congestion and air pollution. According to a study by Georgia State University, traffic congestion costs Atlanta residents $3 billion annually in lost time and increased business costs (Georgia State University). Furthermore, vehicle emissions contribute significantly to air pollution which affects everyone's health.

Instead of spending billions on constructing new express lanes that will only exacerbate our problems in the long run, we should invest this money into expanding Marta so it can service more areas in Atlanta. This would provide an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative for commuters while reducing traffic congestion.
