The deeply personal journey of my family has drawn my attention to an issue that many overlook - the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Detention Centers we unintentionally fund through our taxes. These centers aimed for immigration law enforcement are riddled with countless human rights abuses and neglect, creating a harsh environment for those supposedly under their protection.

According to Human Rights Watch, many held in these centers suffer inadequate medical care, poor dietary conditions, and extreme isolation, risking extensive harm or even death (Human Rights Watch, 2020). Further, those in detention are often subjected to harsh treatment, including physical and psychological abuse and inhumane living conditions (American Civil Liberties Union, 2019).

We demand that the government stop funding these centers until adequate improvements are made to ensure the human rights of detainees. The funding reserved for such enforcement agencies can be redirected towards initiatives that honor human dignity and provide fair, just treatment to everyone in our society. It is our responsibility as a society to ensure that public funds are not used to perpetuate suffering and injustice. This is an urgent call to action.
