Halt FDOT's Plan to Remove Trees for an Unneeded Bike Path on Taft Street

Halt FDOT's Plan to Remove Trees for an Unneeded Bike Path on Taft Street
The Issue
Personally, the preservation of trees on Taft Street is not just a matter of environmental concern, but protective measures for our homes and lives. My neighbor's trees on Taft and 46th avenue serve as a crucial barrier protecting their house from cars involved in the numerous accidents prevalent in this intersection.
This is about safeguarding both the community's safety and the environment. The FDOT (Florida Department of Transportation)'s plan to cut down these trees to create unnecessary bike and pedestrian paths raises significant issues. Firstly, it poses a direct threat to the protective barriers of resident's homes which are already exposed to significant vehicle collision risks. Secondly, it directly impacts the local environment. Trees play a vital role in cleaning the air, providing oxygen, and buffering noise pollution.
In the U.S. alone, vehicle-residential crashes account for over 20% of all vehicular crash deaths (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety; Highway Loss Data Institute, 2019). Properly placed trees can act as protective barriers in these incidents, potentially reducing fatality rates. Moreover, urban trees, like those on Taft Street, alone remove around 784,000 tons of air pollution annually (U.S. Forest Service, 2013).
We must prioritize the safety of our community and the preservation of our natural environment over the creation of unnecessary infrastructures. We request the FDOT to halt their plans of tree removal on Taft Street and to reassess their project to find an alternative that doesn't risk our safety or our environment.
