Halt Deportation of Mrs and Mr Latu & Review New Evidence

The issue

Our family, rooted in New Zealand and of Tongan origin, is in a race against time. Our beloved Sister and Aunty Loasi Latu and her husband are victims of immigration fraud, and now face the looming threat of deportation after living here for over 20 years.

Our family are calling on the NZ Associate Immigration Minister, Hon Christopher Penk, to reconsider our case, with new evidence showing that it is in New Zealand's best interest for the couple to stay. Our evidence clearly demonstrates that deportation would have major humanitarian and economic ramifications.

Loasi is the sole caregiver for her severely disabled older brother, a NZ resident requiring 24/7 care. Mrs Latu's brother cannot speak, eat or go toilet on his own, and has frequent seizures due to epilepsy. A specialist medical report reinforces that Loasi is the only one he listens to and feels safe around. Putting him into State care would go against human rights and healthcare legislation, jeopardise his quality of life and ultimately, his longevity.

An economic analysis from The Commercial Advisory Partnership shows that Mr. and Mrs. Latu have provided and can continue to provide significant economic benefits to New Zealand. This includes approximately $2.1 million in historical economic benefit and an estimated $2.14 million in future economic benefit.

Loasi is also in remission from breast cancer, with her treatment funded privately. Her continued wellbeing relies on her being able to access medications and specialist check ups, which are not available in Tonga.

Finally, the threat of uprooting two individuals who have become integral threads in the fabric of our society goes against the principles that New Zealand stands for - compassion, fairness, and acceptance.

Whilst we respect the laws and regulations of New Zealand Immigration, it is critical to consider the unique circumstances of this case and the dire consequences it holds.

Sign this petition to help us get the Minister to review our case, and grant Mr. and Mrs. Latu the residency status that they arguably should have received decades ago. We don't need you to donate!
