The Issue

Our oceans are under threat. As someone deeply concerned with the health and integrity of our marine ecosystems, I call upon global leaders to enact an immediate stop to deep-sea mining and its destructive practices. This dangerous extraction threatens not only the fragile underwater habitats, the countless and often undiscovered species they harbor, but also the equilibrium of our planet's climate. According to the World Wildlife Fund, deep-sea mining operations have the potential to disrupt climate as they interfere with seafloor sediments that store large quantities of carbon dioxide (World Wildlife Fund, 2020).

Deep-sea territories, rich in biodiversity and cruising with life, deserve our protection and need global preservation measures. Restarting or reestablishing these ecosystems, once damaged, is next to impossible. Therefore, we must emphasize the importance of sustainable alternatives and transparent decision making in relation to our oceans. Future generations have the right to inherit the rich, diverse and healthy oceans we are privileged to share our planet with.

This is not merely about the protection of marine life, but an urgent necessity for human life. The time to act is now - to protect our oceans, to protect ourselves, to mitigate climate change. The urgency of this issue warrants immediate and decisive action. Please, sign this petition to halt the practices of deep-sea mining and prioritize long-term, sustainable approaches for the benefit of our environment, climate, and future generations.
