Halt Construction at Ramsar Site 1208: East Kolkata Wetlands

Halt Construction at Ramsar Site 1208: East Kolkata Wetlands
The Issue
As an environmentalist passionate about sustaining our planet's delicate ecosystems, I've witnessed the irreversible damage that rampant construction and urbanization can inflict on our environment. One such site on the brink of devastation is Ramsar site 1208, the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), world's largest natural sewage treatment functioning in a highly unique way.
Spanning a massive 12500 hectares, the EKW is responsible for the protection of a vast array of biodiversity. Its unique water treatment process not only cleanses the wastewater of Kolkata city but also supports local economy through fishery and farming- a remarkable example of a bio-resource recycling system. However, recent construction plans pose a severe threat to this delicate balance and the biodiversity it supports.
Loss of this site would not only mean loss of species, but it would also endanger human livelihoods that are tied with this ecosystem and increase the pressure on Kolkata's already strained mechanical sewage treatment plants. According to a report from the Journal of Environmental Management, maintaining the existing wetlands' functions is far more cost-effective than replacing them with mechanical treatment systems (Journal of Environmental Management, 2020).
Hence, this issue of construction at EKW is not just an environmental concern but it directly impacts the human communities dependent on it. By signing this petition, you can help us send a strong message to our elected officials and the construction companies involved. We need to protect the East Kolkata Wetlands- for our ecology and our economy. Please sign the petition and help us in this cause.
