Save Salida Colorado's trees! (City postpones the tree-cutting process on H Street.) Now, we need to save the trees from future cutting.
The Issue
The city council of Salida, Colorado -- at a public meeting held January 7, 2014 -- promised to speak with home owners and the Salida tree board to save the existing old-growth trees between 3rd and 10th Streets during the H Street redo project. The majority of residents want to save the trees. The Salida tree board has identified at least 9 mature trees that can be saved -- of the 14 or 15 that were marked for removal by the city engineer.
City council is meeting Tuesday, February 4. We demand that city council save our trees.
Where the trees have heaved the sidewalk, the city can save them by 1) rerouting the sidewalk onto the city right-of-way, 2) rerouting the sidewalk onto an easement on the adjoining property, if the homeowner is willing wants to save the tree, 3) cutting the offending root and pouring a new slab, 4) reconsidering and more carefully assessing bump-outs, or 5) asking if homeowners would be willing to participate in implementing solutions (e.g., implementing creative pathways, stonework, or other – and including paying or helping to pay for mitigation of roots, trimming, creative materials for sidewalks).
