The Issue

Central America is home to some of the most diverse and unique ecosystems in the world. However, these vital habitats are under threat from increasing rates of deforestation and habitat destruction. This unsustainable practice is not only endangering countless species of flora and fauna but is also impacting the lives of the indigenous communities who depend on the forests for their livelihoods.

Currently, more than half of the original forests in Central America have already been cleared for agriculture, livestock, and urban development. The deforestation rate in some areas is among the highest in the world, posing a severe risk to biodiversity. According to Global Forest Watch, Central America lost approximately 6.8 million land of forest from 2001 to 2020, leading to a devastating loss of wildlife habitat.

The destruction of forests contributes significantly to climate change, as trees are crucial for absorbing carbon dioxide. The continued loss of these forests not only accelerates global warming but also reduces the natural resilience against natural disasters such as floods and landslides. The impact of forest destruction is far-reaching and urgent action is needed.
