Peachtree Ridge High School is a school located in Gwinnett County, Georgia. Peachtree Ridge uses a block-based scheduling system giving each student 1.5 hours in each class each semester. Prior to the 2019-2020 school year, students received their grades for 1-semester courses in December. Under the new quarter-system policy that was enacted during the 2019-2020 school year, students have their grades for these 1-semester courses posted in early October. Students are now forced to get all their assignments prior to this deadline.

But what if a student can't? What if the student has had a medical emergency and is now behind on all their classwork? What if the student has issues at home that makes schoolwork difficult? This isn't fair to these students. The grade that they see on eClass, the school grades platform, is the grade going on their transcript. Now sure, the student can talk to their teachers but that wouldn't help them. Many teachers care about their students however teachers are humans too. These teachers realizing many of their students aren't passing try to help them out by giving assignments to these students to help improve their grades. Now, these teachers are struggling to get all these new assignments graded before grades are posted.

The use of the new quarter-system stresses students, teachers, and parents. Students who don't pass during the 1st half of their class are now forced to take the class again. Where does that leave students who have completely full schedules? These students now have to either drop some courses their next semester to retake the whole class again rather than just the half they didn't pass. Despite the student failing the first half the class, they have to finish the class. Knowing that they'd have to take the class again the next semester, why would the student continue working hard in that class for the 2nd half?

If the student can't take the class the next semester, they're forced to take summer school courses. Each summer school course causes parents to pay $250 which is a hefty amount of money for many families.

The implementation of the quarter-system should be reconsidered at Peachtree Ridge. We understand that this policy doesn't come from our school administrators but from Gwinnett County Public Schools.

We're asking administrators and leaders at Peachtree Ridge and Gwinnett County Public School to step up to help students, teachers, and parents oppose this new policy and revert back to our old policy.
