For years and years, Gumtree and many other sales websites have allowed the sale of live animals, such as dogs, kittens, rodents, and even illegal animals in some provinces such as hedgehogs and tenrecs in the Western Cape. 

This gateway to selling animals only supports the backyard breeders and illegal sales of animals, and even in a situation where the individual has good intentions to find the animal a "good home", these animals will very often end up in the wrong hands. There are already far too many animals without homes or in the wrong hands, and something more needs to be done. By not allowing individuals to sell their animals online or give them away for free, a gateway is closed, and therefor sellers have a much smaller market in which to sell, and hopefully this will decrease the market for these sales. I am targeting Gumtree because this is the site that the majority of South Africans use, and I truly believe that by no longer allowing the sale of live animals and eliminating ways for these backyard breeders to sell their animals, this could help contribute to decreasing these types of sales (even if only a little bit).
