Ahmedabad:  A prominent (Right to Information) RTI activist and 'green crusader' Amit Jethwa was shot dead near the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday evening.

Jethwa was campaigning against alleged illegal mining in the Gir Sanctuary areas in Saurashtra region, which is allegedly backed by some politicians. He was shot at by unidentified assailants.

Joint Commissioner of police, Satish Sharma

"Amit Jethwa was killed in firing by two assailants who came on a motorcycle. The murder happened in the evening between 8:30 and 8:45 in the Sola police station area. Further investigation is on," said Joint Commissioner of Police, Satish Sharma.

Jethwa had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Gujarat High Court last month. The petition alleged that mining activities were being carried out in Una and Kodinar in Saurashtra allegedly by Junagadh BJP MP Dinubhai Boghabhai Solanki and his relatives.

Jethwa had further alleged that the Solankis were also running illegal mines and stone crushers in a village on the border of Gir forests.

Is the Gujarat police getting cold feet in the investigations into the murder of RTI activist Amit Jethwa? That is the question, the Jethwa family is asking. The family has demanded a CBI inquiry.

Amit Jethwa's father claims that with a BJP MP from Junagadh, Dinu Solanki being  named, the police investigations were not in right earnest.

It's been four days since Jethwa was shot dead in Gujarat. However, no leads on the killer yet. Jethwa's family says, they will settle for nothing less than a CBI inquiry.(Gujarat: RTI activist Amit Jethwa shot dead)

"It has been four days since Amit's murder, but no leads have come yet. I have faith on the Gujarat police but even four days back I had requested the government to call for a CBI inquiry. I want justice," said Bhikhubhai Jethwa, Amit's father.

Even as the entire Khambha village in Junagadh mourns Amit's death, Solanki remains untraceable.(RTI activist killed for campaign against BJP MP, says family)

Police claim they have leads which point to the Junagadh connection but no arrest has been made so far.

For the family, already grieving the loss of its dear son, apart from the pain and trauma, its anger that is mounting.
