Guaranteed minimum pay per individual trip for Ride-Hail drivers in British Columbia

Guaranteed minimum pay per individual trip for Ride-Hail drivers in British Columbia
The Issue
To: The Honourable Jennifer Whiteside, BC Minister of Labour
Cc: BC Employment Standards Branch & Passenger Transportation Board
We, the undersigned, are ride-hail drivers, passengers, and supporters of fair working conditions in British Columbia.
While we support BC’s recent step toward protecting app-based gig workers through minimum standards of $21.43/hour (engaged time) and $0.45/km (ride-hail), these protections fall short in practice.
Platforms like Uber and Lyft are only required to “top up” driver earnings after the end of the pay period, which may take 1–2 weeks. In that time, drivers may:
- Earn far less than minimum standards on individual trips
- Drive long distances for low fares
- Receive no pay during idle time between trips
These delays and inconsistencies create uncertainty and financial hardship—especially for full-time drivers who depend on consistent, fair earnings.
We demand the following amendments:
- Guarantee minimum standards per trip:
Ensure that each individual trip pays out at least the equivalent of $21.43/hr plus $0.45/km.
- Require real-time trip summaries to show pay breakdowns (time, distance, base fare, top-up if applicable).
- Enforce transparent reporting and top-up verification so drivers can confirm compliance without complex tracking.
BC led Canada with first-of-its-kind gig-worker protections. It’s time to take the next step—ensuring these protections are applied trip by trip, not just averaged over weeks.
We urge you to adopt these common-sense changes and make fairness real for every ride-hail driver in British Columbia.
