Nitya Muralidharan started this petition to GST Counclil

A year ago I made the switch to Plant-Based Nutrition. My reasons for making the switch were many ranging from being empathetic to animals, for my own health, and for the planet. In this process, I discovered Plant-based milk, but found the product to be expensive, initially I thought it was a supply-demand issue, but later I was shocked to find that Plant-based milk in India was taxed at 18-20% while milk was taxed at 5%.

To meet our Dairy demands, cows are constantly producing milk, and the only way that is possible is if they are pregnant throughout their lifetimes. If alternatives are available in the form of Soy milk, oat milk, cashew-oat milk, and are affordable people might consider making the switch or having alternatives from time to time. Being empathetic to animals should not come at a cost, and hence this is a petition to treat plant-based milk as regular milk and ensure it gets taxed accordingly so that it is easily accessible to people who want to make the switch without burning a hole in their pocket.

In India, Plant-Based Milk ( Oat, Soy, Cashew-Oat )is being treated in the same manner as packaged snacks, biscuits, sugary juices, and chocolates which are high in fat, sugar, and sodium which get taxed in the 12-18% bracket. While in every other manner Plant-based milk is similar to milk, the current tax regime is treating Plant-based Milk like a pack of deep-fried chips.

Agriculture is responsible for around 16% of India’s GHG emissions. Of this, 74% is due to methane produced from livestock  largely cows and buffalo and rice cultivation

The Solutions to Climate change are many, one such solution lies in the food we eat, while our individual choices make a small impact and help us feel better, for a larger shift we need everyone's support to help push for meaningful policy changes

You can help make the switch to a cruelty-free, planet-friendly alternative easier by signing this petition
