The Issue

Dear Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools (GSCS) Board Trustees and Director of Education
We request a review and amendment to the current GSCS Change Room Policy to clearly state that GSCS change rooms are single sex spaces only.
The current policy focuses on there being individual spaces available for those students who wish to use them. This is a good option to have for students and we support it. However we are still concerned about student safety in intimate spaces.
Our concern is with what is not in the policy. As it is written, the current policy does not express that change rooms (and all related spaces) are single sex spaces. This is a safety concern for all students. The students entrusted to the care of the staff at GSCS deserve better.
The current policy supports those who want a separate space but what about the student, who, for whatever reason, decides they want to use the opposite sex locker room to change? How are students being protected from indecent exposure?
Though a policy does not stop a student from making poor choices, a good and clear policy does allow for proper directions for staff and appropriate repercussions if the need were to arise. Clarifying the policy will also reassure students that they are safe in those spaces.
Being a Catholic institution we must speak the truth boldly. The truth in this matter is that boys and girls are different and they need private changing rooms and washrooms, meaning these spaces are single sex spaces. It is also important to note that this is protected space under the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code, 2018
Discrimination in accommodation, service or facility prohibited
12(1) No person, directly or indirectly, alone or with another or by the interposition of another, shall, on the basis of a prohibited ground:
(a) deny to a person or class of persons any accommodation, service or facility to which the public is customarily admitted or that is offered to the public; or
(b) discriminate against a person or class of persons with respect to any accommodation, service or facility to which the public is customarily admitted or that is offered to the public.
(2) Subsection (1) does not apply to prevent the barring of any person on the basis of that person’s sex from any accommodation, service or facility on the ground of public decency
Again, we request a review and amendment or an additional policy to clearly state that GSCS change rooms are single sex spaces only.
