Every time a new President is elected, the GSA Administrator must sign a letter acknowledging the winner’s victory so the transition can officially begin. This act releases transition funds and allows the incoming President-Elect to get office space and begin coordinating access to federal agencies to plan for potential policy changes. This letter, called a letter of “ascertainment”, is what officially starts this process.

GSA Administrator Emily Murphy has refused to sign this letter acknowledging President-Elect Biden’s victory. Every American should be concerned that this routine process has been politicized. Administrator Murphy is harming our national security by blocking Mr. Biden and his staff from accessing these agencies. Smooth transitions are essential for our security and our democracy.
