The Issue

Asheville thrives on community and sustainable living. With a surge in population and new residential developments springing up, it's crucial to ensure that we retain the essence of what makes Asheville unique. We propose a zoning and development policy that mandates all new multi-family residential projects, such as apartment complexes and townhome clusters, to include dedicated community garden spaces for residents.

Community gardens offer numerous benefits: they provide residents with access to fresh, nutritious produce, promote sustainability, foster community interactions, and enhance mental well-being. Decades of research show that community gardening can increase a sense of neighborhood pride and reduce crime rates.

Currently, amenities such as pools, gyms, and dog parks are standard features in many housing developments. By treating shared food-growing spaces as another essential community infrastructure, we can reinforce Asheville's commitment to sustainability and community health.

A policy making community gardens a requirement would position Asheville as a leader in innovative urban planning, ensuring that our future is green and that our city grows both physically and sustainably. Investing in community gardens is an investment in the social, economic, and environmental capital of our city.

Join us in advocating for this positive change by signing this petition. Let's ensure that as Asheville grows, it does so with the well-being of the community in mind. Your support is crucial in making this vision a reality.
