Sexual Assault and Consent Must be Taught in Schools

Sexual Assault and Consent Must be Taught in Schools
The Issue
As social media has brought to light many injustices in America as well as around the world, more attention has been brought to the sexual assaults of men and women. An average of 400,000 people get sexually assaulted or raped every year. This number is not accurate however, due to the amount of men and women who do not report their rape or assault.
In America it is known that rapists or sexual assaulters do not face appropriate consequences for their actions. This leads men and women to keep their tragedies to themselves because they are aware of the fact that not much will be done to help them.
Young girls are told at a very young age that they are not allowed to dress a certain way because it may sexually arouse or distractions to boys. When they grow up most women are still are not allowed to dress in outfits that show too much skin because if an assault or rape happens to them the famous question will arise, "What were you wearing?" and some are told "You were asking for it". In schools the idea of women needing to accommodate to men by dressing modestly to not attract unwanted attention is imprinted in the minds of many for 12 years of schooling. As these young boys and girls grow up, the same idea is in the back of their mind because of the years of enforcing a woman aimed dress code. Our education system teaches sexual education but not what consent is. Many parents hope their children can distinguish between right and wrong but often that is not the case. In America's education system, students are taught daily living skills, the effects of drugs, eating disorders, mental health disorders, and how to be protected from STD's. On the other hand, no one is taught the crippling and long lasting effects of rape that victims endure.
Rapists and assaulters in most cases are not punished for their horrifying actions and it rarely affect their lives. Victims/ survivors of these heinous crimes live a life that will forever be changed because of a selfish and horrific act of another. By addressing sexual assault, rape, and consent in schools young men and women will be educated on a topic that is essential for their future lives.
The effects of sexual assault/ rape must be taught in schools. What signifies consent must be taught in schools. A dress code aimed at women must be removed. Any male, teacher or student, who feels sexually arousal from under aged girls must be dealt with. As a notion we must stop protecting predators.
