Bring Zeuterin (a neutering drug) to Mb. Save dogs from suffering due to overpopulation
The Issue
Our goal is to bring an advanced chemical neutering procedure to Canada that is being successfully used in the USA to provide a sustainable and humane solution to dog over population in remote communities.
Zeuterin is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved injectable compound for sterilizing male dogs aged three months to ten months without the removal of the testicles. This FDA approved process, consisting of a single injection of Zeuterin to each testes, quickly and permanently neuters dogs, with no surgical intervention or general anesthesia needed. When properly administered, Zeuterin is considered to be 99.6% effective.
The over population of dogs is a serious problem across Manitoba. Dogs are domesticated animals and are unable to survive on their own. In remote areas unintended breeding creates stray dogs that are unable to fend for themselves. They will eventually pack up and can become potentially dangerous to people and other animals. This leads to dog attacks by these starving stray dogs. To eliminate the attacks, some communities have regular dog culls. A cull is when stray dogs may be shot and killed. Sadly not all dogs are killed instantly and many suffer a slow death from gunshot wounds. Culls aren't the only concern of these poor innocent souls. Starvation, dehydration, freezing, and cruelty will claim the lives of most stray dogs who won't live to see their first birthday.
Currently in Manitoba there are over 50 dog rescues who help take in strays and injured animals from remote communities to be vetted and adopted. Spay and neuter clinics have helped but with limited resources it is difficult to provide a safe recovery from the surgery. Unfortunately this has barely put a dent in the overwhelming need across Manitoba. There are not enough resources available to put an end to the ongoing suffering of dogs in our communities. Zeuterin is a safe alternative to a surgical neuter that can be taken and administered in remote communities that do not have veterinarian resources. Neutering is the only humane solution to end the needless suffering and deaths of dogs across Canada.
