Australia’s diverse culture is one of its most defining characteristics. As Australians, we are proud of our Australian culture and Fijian heritage and we want to recognise and celebrate this Fijian heritage everyday. Fresh Kava (Piper methysticum) consumption is part of our Fijian heritage, religious and cultural events. Due to COVID-19 and travel restrictions in effect, Fijians and other Pacific Island nations have not been able to travel and bring back 4 kilograms (legal limit per person) of kava powder to Australia in their accompanied baggage.

Australian Fijians have always used Kava in religious and cultural events to strengthen family community and social cohesion which are important aspects of Australian life. During this difficult period of COVID-19, it is timely and more important to continue building social cohesion in our communities. This sentiment has been echoed by many Australian leaders in past 6 months that there is a strong agreement with the notion that we should be emphatically proud of our achievements as a multicultural society.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Australian Government and additional decision makers to provide temporary exemption to allow Australians to import 4 kilograms of fresh Kava (Piper methysticum) powder via freight/postage for personal consumption until international travel restrictions have been lifted.

Once you’ve signed, I encourage you to contact these great Australians directly and encourage them to lead the way by requesting them to "provide temporary exemption to allow Australians to import 4 kilograms of fresh Kava (Piper methysticum) powder via freight/postage for personal consumer until international travel restrictions have been lifted"
