Remove Confederate Statues at the Texas State Capitol

The Issue

I love calling Texas home, but why do we allow for confederate statues to stand on the grounds of the Texas State Capitol?

These artifacts of the past serve to promote a distorted telling of history with no mention of the crimes and atrocities committed. We should dismantle the monuments and have them transported to either the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum or the American Civil War Museum, so their true place in history can be taught properly. For instance, in Germany no Nazi symbols or monuments are permitted in public spaces or at government buildings. Nazi artifacts are only allowed to be displayed at exhibits with accurate historical context. The Germans understand that public statues and symbols are a way for a society to showcase the values they cherish.

The presence of confederate monuments at the Texas State Capitol serves as a tacit endorsement of racist views and values by officials to make Texas' minority and immigrant communities feel inferior. The center of Texas politics cannot and should not be a memorial for pure evil. Please remove these hateful markers, so all Texans can continue to feel proud about calling this great state home.
