Port Aransas Needs You! Stop the Industrialization of Harbor Island.

Port Aransas Needs You! Stop the Industrialization of Harbor Island.
The Issue
Port Aransas, Texas is fighting for its very existence as the Port of Corpus Christi Authority orchestrates an attack on this community as they pursue unrestrained industrial development on Harbor Island within the city limits of Port Aransas.
Our local estuary is one of the most productive on the Texas coast. The TPWD has expressed grave concerns about the Port’s plans for Harbor Island, as have the General Land Office, CCA Texas, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the International Crane Foundation. Environmentally it would be a disaster.
There are five major industrial projects planned to be built only 1000’ feet from the Robert’s Point community park.
- PCCA Desalination Plant (TCEQ Permit No. WQ0005253000)
- Channel Deepening (SWG-2019-00067)
- Harbor Island Terminal Facility (SWG-2019-00245)
- Lone Star Ports TCEQ Air Quality Permit Application (SOAH Docket No. 582-20-3438)
- Axis Midstream Terminal (SWG-2018-00789).
Each of these projects, singularly and cumulatively represent a significant, and well documented risk to public safety, the environment, and the tourism-based economy of Port Aransas.
- Jobs - Catastrophic economic impacts to our local businesses, such as fishing, hunting and nature tour guides, restaurants, hotels, retail, boat dealers, and marina operations rely on a healthy marine environment for their success.
- Safety - With only two ways in and out of Port A, an oil spill, fire, or collision in this narrow water way could result in 10’s of thousands of residents and visitors to be trapped, and unable to safely evacuate or shelter from the effects of an incident.
- Wildlife - Numerous endangered and threatened species, including the Whooping Crane, the Kemp’s Ridley Turtle, and many other species are directly exposed to the cumulative impacts of planned industrial development.
- Habitat - Additional dredging and discharge of pollutants into the tidal flow will negatively impact critical spawning and nursery grounds for shrimp, crab, redfish, flounder, trout, and drum that are commercially and recreationally important species.
- Travel - The additional large vessel traffic at Harbor Island will result in significant disruption to TxDoT operated ferry service; as well as all other commercial and recreational marine vessels transiting the area.
- Enjoyment - Texans want and need a place to experience the natural environment with our family and friends on their time off.
Please sign this petition, Governor Abbott and other Representatives need to know that this is the wrong thing for the Port Aransas area, that is widely known as Texas’ Best Beach…they should put a stop to this before it is too late!
