Northside Apartments collecting rents from UTD students even though kids are at home

The Issue

Dear UTD Parents/Students,

As you all know we all got impacted by COVID-19, and most of the North Side students and University of Texas Dallas (UTD) students have already left their apartments due to the nationwide shutdown. Since March 16th, UTD students have not returned to UTD but Northside and a few other apartments are forcing the students to pay the rent and they are not willing to waive even the parking lot fees, even though the students have already taken their cars back home.

Several parents approached the Northside Apartment management; however, Northside management is not willing to waive the rent for the rest of the months. In this group, some of the parents have already lost their jobs and some of them are still in their jobs although with huge uncertainty regarding continued employment. Some of the parents explained their situation honestly, but Northside is not willing to discuss with parents. We definitely need to this to our law makers regarding NorthSide and other Apartment unethical clause in the agreement.

Here is the Calculation:
Northside has 11 months contract and they are forcing the students to pay rent from March – August in the COVID-19 lockdown situation. On an average per month cost of $1000 per student, we are paying rent of $6000 without using the apartment during a 6 months period (March to August 2020).

At this point, we need to unite as a group and get signatures from all parents and students, and collectively raise our concerns to the local Congressman in your district as well as Richardson Congressman Colin Allred, the 2 Texas Senators, Texas Gov. Lt.Gov, Texas Attorney General, UTD President Dr. Richard C. Benson and all the UTD Leadership . As a part of this initiative we should bring this to the attention of Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Houston media outlets.

NOTE: Please request all UTD parents/students (2019-2020 residents) who are residing in Northside Apartment or any other apartments to sign this petition ASAP Also future students who have sign the contract for 2020-2021.

We definitely need to raise this issue to our lawmakers about unethical practices of Northside Management in the current and future agreement.
