Friends, fellow teachers, and Parents...

HAPPENING RIGHT NOW:

TEA- Texas Education Agency (and Greg Abbott)

Have decided that they will be moving forward with re-opening schools in August all while working remote themselves until January.

Meanwhile, outdoor gatherings above 10 people have been restricted. They have also canceled the Texas State Fair which was set to open in October.

MY FEELINGS:

With so many restrictions already set in place for gatherings over 10, and thousands of events already canceled, why haven’t schools been looked at with the same concerns? 

They plan to send millions (yes millions) into closed buildings putting them in ABSOLUTE risk of being exposed to the virus all the while hiding in their own homes until January. So basically, millions of children, teachers, administrators, and all of their families will be experiments for “testing the water” of this virus. This doesn’t even begin to mention the fall/winter flu, strep throat, cold season that drags down everyone’s immune system...and then COVID on top of that.

This is happening now after Texas has become a “hot-spot” with new cases being reported everyday.

We have not gotten ahead of this pandemic and it is sure to get worse before it gets any better. 

Families will be given the choice to send kids to school, or participate in an online format. Question... who might be teaching the kids at home? Well... they’re not going to hire new staff for this obviously. So yes, the same teachers working full time at school will end their “at school day” and head home to teach their “online school day,” or just juggle two full-time jobs at the same time.

TEACHERS NEED OUR HELP!

Teachers should be considered during this blatant disregard for their safety.

Texas Teachers currently have no options in the matter. Since Texas is a “Right To Work” state, that means that they can be fired at any time for no reason. This puts an immense amount of pressure on teachers. Basically, they better show up to work despite their fear and reservations, or else they could be fired.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

We must demand that Texas Teachers are given options for their safety that go beyond “wear a mask.” Texas Teachers must be allowed to “opt-out” of teaching on campus without fear of losing pay or their job.
