Greenwood Opposes Approval of Inappropriate Development

The Issue

Our beloved community of Greenwood, Alabama, with its rich history, was founded in 1936. It has become a cherished home for many, with original homesteads still gracefully standing on large parcels of land. These homes are not just structures; they are the embodiment of generations of families with many properties now occupied by the second and third generations. These homes represent a tapestry of memories, culture, and a way of life that has taken nearly a decade to build and cherish.

However, a new builder is now proposing to construct modern homes on very narrow lots within our district. This proposal starkly contrasts the character and heritage that Greenwood exudes. The narrow lot development would disrupt the aesthetic balance and forever alter the fabric of our neighborhood. They may fit the blueprint of other areas, but they are not a fit for the unique essence of our community.

We understand the inevitable need for development, but it should be in harmony with our community’s history and topography. Development must be thoughtful, and it must respect and preserve what makes our neighborhood special. There has been no comprehensive stormwater or infrastructure plan presented for this densely packed housing project and and resultant traffic.

Moreover, research from the National Association of Home Builders shows that mismatched developments can significantly lower property values of existing homes by up to 20%. This imposes an unfair economic burden on longstanding residents who are deeply invested in their community.

We urge the Bessemer Planning & Zoning Commission to demand a more comprehensive study to be obtained prior to their approval and the Bessemer City Council to reconsider the approval of this project.

Development plans should be revised to respect the current architectural style, and broader parcels should remain as they are to maintain the integrity and charm of our historic neighborhood.

Please join us in protecting our community's heritage and ensuring a sustainable future that all generations can enjoy.
