This student was another example in the Greenville ISD Suzuki Strings program and the information I have learned is the parents or guardians of students in the Suzuki program are being required to return the violins to the school district next week. The district did not give parents the option of purchasing the instruments (to my knowledge) so parents are now forced to make a difficult decision: to purchase an instrument elsewhere and find a suitable replacement for the instructor; which in and of itself is difficult in a semi rural area with the high standards required in the Suzuki Strings regiment in order to enable their children to continue learning or to lose untold amounts of their time and resources they have committed to this program for their children.
The financial burden could be substantial for many families and is potentially untenable in both the cost and time required to find both a new instrument and teacher as well as the expense of future lessons.

I will end this post with a quote attributed to the man who is credited with beginning the Suzuki Strings methodology.

”The main concern for parents should be to bring up their children as noble human beings. That is sufficient. If this is not their greatest hope, in the end the child may take a road contrary to their expectations. Children can play very well. We must try to make them splendid in mind and heart also”
                                       Shinichi Suzuki

I can only hope the school district understands the “dereliction of duty” they have engaged in by suspending this program with such little notice and with seemingly appalling reasons and decides to reinstate the Suzuki program for the benefit of the students they are supposed to serve!
