No Compromise! No Retreat! Support Mapinduzi!

The Issue

Mapinduzi is a Greenville-based organization in North Carolina that is dedicated to advancing the interest of all colonized people. Our mission to achieve transformative change in Greenville, NC starts here. Thank you for signing and sharing.

UPDATED JULY 15, 2020:

As you may know, we've achieved one of our original five demands: ending Greenville Police Department's (GPD) Involvement in the 1033 Program which transfers excess military equipment to civilian law enforcement agencies, instigating and funding the intensifying domestic militarization and occupation strategy of the US.

This is a step in the right direction, but it is not enough to disrupt the occupational strategies of an increasingly militarized police force in our very own West Greenville.

Our updated demands embody our vision of what the next steps of transformative change can look like when city leaders work with the community to enact real transformative change that prioritizes the interests of the people of Greenville and disrupts the violent policing of the working-class.

These are our updated demands:

  1. Transform the West Greenville GPD Substation in The People's Resource Center
    • Replace the militaristic occupation of the working-class neighborhood of West Greenville with The People’s Resource Center, a community-controlled center with resources that offer sustainable, empowering assets to the community at large.
  2. Community Control of Police
    • The community must control and operate any  institution that holds the power of life and death over it. Democratically-elected community police boards must be developed with the power to hire, fire, discipline, and promote.
  3. A REAL Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB)
    • An independent CCRB should be established with the power to subpoena and indict any law enforcement.
  4. An Independent Prosecutor for Police Brutality Cases
    • District attorneys work directly with police on a daily basis. They rely one on another to indict, prosecute, and try cases. It's a conflict of interest to have local DAs prosecute police.
  5. Drop all charges against those arrested at Greenville protests
    • Individuals arrested at recent Greenville protests must be freed of all charges.

These demands prioritize cultivating peace in our communities and securing justice for all of our people. Is there anything "sick and disgusting" about the pursuit of safety and freedom for all? Unfortunately, Greenville, NC mayor, PJ Connelly described our mission as exactly that: sick and disgusting.

If you believe in a more just and peaceful Greenville, a Greenville that is safe and free for all of its people, sign our petition and stand with us.

UPDATED JULY 1, 2020:

On June 27th, 2020, we spoke in front of the Pitt County Courthouse with partners at the Coalition Against Racism and the community to instigate action on our proposed demands and to include several additional demands for the City Council of Greenville, NC and the mayor of Greenville, PJ Connelly.

The police are a consequence of wealth, not the cause of it, and the rebellion against racism and law enforcement brutality will continue to raise this critical question: Which side are you on in the struggle?

This fight is against white supremacy and the capitalist systems which were built on racist exploitation. The conditions that people of color endure will transform only when colonized people shift power into their own hands and exercise self-determination. For this reason, the struggle is inclusive. White folks must also support this accountability of law enforcement. It is in the interest of our community, not one person or group of people.

We want community control over police. We are not fighting for reforms like increased police training or more consistent usage of body cameras. If this force has to be trained to impact their racist attitudes, if they must be recorded in their brutalization of colonized people, is this an institution that can be reformed?

Law enforcement has failed to protect and serve. They have betrayed the public trust, and we insist on the abolition of this system. As development of a safe alternative progresses, law enforcement must be held accountable to an elected, independent Civilian Police Review Board with subpoena power.

The Coalition Against Racism and Mapinduzi are showing solidarity with people across the world impacted by state-sanctioned violence and US imperialism. We must unite to end the war on Black America and to end the imperialist wars in South America, Palestine, and other places oppressed by the genocidal regimes of colonialism.
