Change at Riverside High School

The Issue

On August 17, 2021, Greenville County Schools started another school term. Since the start of school, Riverside High School, located in Greer, has enforced a new dress code policy. This policy targeted the female attendees of Riverside and resulted in many cases of discriminatory actions. The dress code includes banning ripped pants that go above the knee, shorts that aren't longer than the knee length, the requirement of pants being at the natural waistline, and more. When the bell rings for the first period, the teachers must do an ID and dress code check every morning, this is an issue because the teachers ONLY reprimand the female students. When reprimanded you're sent to the nurse's office where you will be forced to change your attire by going home to get a change of clothes or by having someone bring you some. If neither of those is possible, you're forced to sit in the nurse's office unable to go back to class until you change. When walking into the school you will see many of the male attendees in t-shirts and shorts that are obscenely short, yet they aren't being called out for breaking the policies.

Last school term, news came out that two staff members at Riverside were being investigated for sexual misconduct against students and teens. Darah Huffman has been the principal since 2017. Many articles state that Huffman was aware of the allegations and didn't proactively try to stop the situation. Since then, Huffman has enforced the new dress code policy that targets female students, many have stated their anger and frustration with the change.

Inequality of males and females is still a major issue. For a school that's motto is "Reaching Higher Standards" the administration is doing a poor job at doing that.

We, as students, parents, and members of the local community, are asking the school and the district to treat those who attend the school as equal and to always care about the safety of students, and not wait until it's too late.
