Save the Greensburg Salem School District Music Department

The Issue

The Greensburg Salem School Board is proposing budget cuts that will hurt the music department. These cuts include the only elementary band teacher, half of the choir programs, and the majorette instructor for the marching band. The elementary band teach will no longer be providing instruction during the day to elementary students. Instead they are proposing an after school extracurricular activity program but will not be providing transportation to home which will cause many students to be excluded. During the day, this teacher will be covering half of the classes at the Middle School for band and half for chorus. The current Middle School chorus teacher will be moved to the High School half day to cover High School choir because the High School choir director position is not being replaced after a retirement. This leaves three teachers to cover instrumental music/choral education for grades 4-12. Alongside this, the $50,000 for new uniforms which was granted to the marching band in march was taken back. The marching band has not received new uniforms since 2005 and is in desperate need. The board has been decreasing the size of the music department for years and soon it will be gone completely. The School Board has decided that cutting programs is a more viable option than raising taxes despite the fact that the average increase would be less than $36 a year. The students want nothing more than to have their program back and have created a group to try and make that happen. We are asking the School Board to please consider a minor tax increase in order to keep the music department a viable education opportunity.
