Recognise the significance of the solar eclipse, and provide pupils in school with the opportunity to view a live feed of the eclipse indoors, or to go outside in groups with solar viewing glasses and/or pinhole projectors.
The Issue
I have been told by the school that they are 'doing nothing for the event'. Pupils who are absent from class will be penalised as normal, and the school has no plans in place for viewing the eclipse as it happens, either by video, or by projection. Pupils with solar viewing glasses will not be allowed to go outside and use them.
It is British Science Week, we have BBC coverage of the eclipse, many schools are having events and using it as an opportunity to inspire interest in science with a dramatic darkening of the sky, in one short morning event.
Greenfaulds High School is dismissing the value that witnessing this rare astronomical event will have on many pupils and it goes against the idea that school is a place of education.
