Stop letting pet stores sell ill pets!

The Issue

On August 2nd 2016 my boyfriend took me to Greenbrier Family Pet Center to get me a baby rabbit. My bunny of ten years had just passed and I was distraught. Three days later the baby bunny fell ill. We rushed him to the emergency vet and he was diagnosed with the deadly parasite coccidia. The veterinarian told us that the disease has progressed to the point that it was very obvious the bunny had it when we bought him. Not only that, but the disease is also contagious to other animals. Luckily enough we were able to treat him after two vet visits, hundreds of dollars and two doses of medication. However this disease is deadly and any inexperienced rabbit owner would not have known to take their bunny to the vet. I can only assume the other bunnies in the litter were not as fortunate. I called the pet store and let the owner know that the bunny I bought was ill. She was not concerned and very rude. She laughed and hung up on me. She continues to sell ill rabbits from the same breeder. She also sells the bunnies same day! The bunny we bought was sold within the hour of arriving at the pet store. Two others had been sold prior. They sell these bunnies as soon as they arrive with no quarantine period to make a quick buck. After doing research I discovered that not only are they not holding these rabbits to ensure they aren't ill, but they are also taking them from their mothers much too young which exposes them to these illnesses and compromises their ability to fight infection. If you don't believe me, look up how long a bunny must be nursed before it is taken by its mother and you will find that four weeks old is much too soon! The owner refuses to pay any vet bills. She sold all of the sick bunnies to unknowing owners, laughed about it and continues to do so. When I sent animal services to her store she lied to the officer and told him that the bunnies in the store are from the same batch mine came from which was not true because she sold all of those bunnies same day! She also told the officer that she takes her bunnies to the same vet I saw which was also false because they are selling the bunnies instantly without taking them to a vet at all. She is manipulating the system to make money and must be stopped. Please sign this petition to help my bunny and so many others from being placed in danger because of incompetent pet sellers who have no regard or remorse for ill animals! Signing this petition will state that you think Greenbrier Family Pet Center must hold their bunnies for a total of 7 days prior to sale to ensure they are in good health! This will ensure that the bunnies are a bit old enough to be sold and will ensure that the pet store employees will have had time to notice any illnesses before selling to a pet owner. This experience has been expensive and traumatizing. Please help me prevent this from happening to another innocent animal lover!
