Greek House Master Keys

Greek House Master Keys
The Issue
Lehigh decided this year that Greek houses should not receive their respective master keys as they have in the past. This decision was imposed on Lehigh students coming back to campus this year without any warning or explanation. Lehigh students will pay more than a quarter of a million dollars over their 4 years here and are now being expected to pay fines for accidental lockouts. While this is a blatant money grab, it also poses a serious risk to individuals' safety within these houses, and the safety of the facilities.
These master keys have not only been important for individuals who have locked themselves out of their rooms but have also been important for the safety of the residents. In the event someone were to be locked in their room and require immediate medical attention, the time it will take for LUPD to gain access to the room may be the difference between medical personnel giving the attention the student needs or being too late.
In a day-to-day sense Chapters looking to host events will now be unable to lock off access to rooms that they do not wish their guests to have access to. Lehigh expects houses to be kept in good condition, yet this will undoubtedly lead to stolen, items, and damage that could've been prevented with locked doors.
This petition is to show that the Greek community has come to rely on these keys for more than just unlocking bedrooms. These keys are important for houses to be able to control their chapter space, and taking them away has done nothing but hurt the students affected by this. Lehigh and Housing's mission is to promote a safe and healthy on-campus living experience and this is a step in the wrong direction. We are petitioning so they will give students the master keys back.
