Great nicobar island

Great nicobar island
The Issue
- Great Nicobar Island is one of India’s most ecologically important regions. Its forests, mangroves, coral reefs, beaches, and coastal ecosystems support unique wildlife and help protect the island from storms, coastal erosion, and climate impacts.
- Large-scale construction and rapid development can permanently damage these natural systems. Once old forests are cleared, coastlines altered, and habitats fragmented, the loss cannot easily be reversed.
This is not only about protecting trees. It is about protecting biodiversity, freshwater systems, marine life, and the long-term environmental security of future generations. Development should be responsible, science-based, and designed so that it does not destroy the natural foundation that makes the island valuable.
We urge the Government of India to carefully review projects proposed for Great Nicobar Island and ensure that environmental protection remains central to all decisions.
We call for:
- - transparent environmental review and public disclosure of ecological assessments
- - protection of forests, mangroves, coral reefs, nesting beaches, and wildlife habitats
- - independent scientific evaluation of long-term ecological risks
- - development planning that minimizes irreversible environmental damage
- - meaningful consultation with local communities and affected stakeholders
India’s progress and environmental protection must go together. Great Nicobar is not only a development site—it is a living ecosystem of national importance.
Please sign this petition to support the protection of Great Nicobar Island for present and future generations.
