Warrenpoint Grass Roots Community Centre

The Issue

A grass roots community centre for the people of Warrenpoint and beyond is greatly needed.

With a population of over 7.5K, a communal location that will provide the fundamental social needs of this great town is essential if it is to continue to grow & prosper.

A centre for all of the community would provide many opportunities such as fitness, education, arts & culture, and recreation.  Many clubs & social groups could avail of these facilities to simply meet and greet, socialise, share ideas, plan & host events and even celebrate achievements!  Youth friendship, computer, book, sports clubs, music practice, & many voluntary groups would all benefit from such a facility.

A community centre would also have many positive economic benefits to the area via the creation of new jobs and the possibility of providing work experience for those seeking it.

There are many viable locations within the Warrenpoint area that meet the criteria of a community centre, none more so than that of the current PSNI station in Charlotte Street Warrenpoint. This station is due to close and is expected to be up for sale in the coming months. As stated only one of many viable locations within this area.

A grassroots community centre for the people of this town is needed now.

We are asking the elected Newry Mourne & Down councillors of the Crotlieve area which encompasses Warrenpoint to take immediate action on requesting & securing the approval & funding for the set up and on- going maintenance of a community centre for the people of Warrenpoint and beyond.   The urgency on which we request this is paramount due to the imminent closure and sale of the PSNI station.  An opportunity to aquire such a premises might not present itself again and therefore we are asking that they act with haste.

Please sign this petition to request your Councillors to take action on this  in order to make this possibility a reality for your community.  Thank You!

I can assure everyone that myself and my colleague Cllr Sinead Ennis are committed to realising a community centre for Warrenpoint. It's long overdue and a project I intend to see happen. The council have been working on a potential project this past two years. It's not the site of the police station. The site in question is close to the town centre and the overall project has the potential to create a community hub that offers so much more. Because of ongoing talks with other organisations/bodies and the sensitivity around commercial sites/properties we have to date, been unable to report on it. The Council had a comprehensive report finalised over a year ago which clearly shows without question the need for a community Centre. Only last Thursday at our DEA meeting Crotlieve councillors give senior management the authority to progress to the next step. Again let me assure everyone this is my number one priority and I intend to see it become a reality. Warrenpoint needs and deserves a Community Centre. I have spoken to our CEO and other senior management and they are fully aware of the need and desire for this project.

A feasibility study to consider the provision of a community hub in Warrenpoint which would provide a range of public services and community, recreation and youth provision has been examined over the past few years. Studies show if the police station is to close it would make the ideal site for the community hub, we as a community should ensure this happens.

Just a short note to inform all supporters of a Community Hub/ Centre that I and we as Councillors have been working on this issue over these past twelve months. Options are currently being explored and worked upon. I for one would be delighted to see a viable multi-purpose Centre in Warrenpoint, run by a wide range of volunteers from all parts and sections within the Warrenpoint community. Let's hope we can all make it happen.
