Grant The Release of Mr Imran Khan, Ex Prime Minister Of Pakistan
Grant The Release of Mr Imran Khan, Ex Prime Minister Of Pakistan
The Issue
To: Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and Members of the UK Parliament
We, the undersigned, as concerned British citizens of Pakistani origin and citizens of the wider international community, are writing to urge the UK Government to intervene in the grave situation currently unfolding in Pakistan regarding the treatment of Mr. Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, by the current military junta in Pakistan.
Background:
Mr. Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was removed from office in April 2022 through a vote of no confidence, which many believe was orchestrated by the military establishment in Pakistan. Since then, Mr. Khan has faced a relentless campaign of political persecution, including arbitrary arrests, violence, and threats to his life. His recent legal battles and detention have raised serious concerns among international human rights organizations, as well as millions of Pakistani citizens, both within Pakistan and the diaspora.
The ongoing treatment of Mr. Imran Khan has escalated to a point where the possibility of a death sentence has been discussed publicly, further deepening concerns about his safety and human rights. As a former democratically elected leader, Mr. Khan's political persecution, including his potential execution, is a violation of the fundamental principles of justice, democracy, and human dignity.
Call for Action:
British Pakistanis and the Pakistani diaspora around the world are watching with great concern and anguish the dangerous course of events that may lead to Mr. Khan’s wrongful execution. We believe that the UK Government, as an influential international power and a key ally of Pakistan, has a moral and diplomatic responsibility to take immediate steps to:
Urgently demand the immediate release of Mr. Imran Khan from unlawful detention and ensure that his legal rights are fully respected under both Pakistani and international law.
Intervene diplomatically through the United Nations, the Commonwealth, and directly with the Government of Pakistan to halt any actions that could lead to the unlawful execution or harm of Mr. Khan.
Advocate for the restoration of democracy and the end of military interference in Pakistan’s political process, ensuring that the people of Pakistan can exercise their democratic rights without fear of persecution or intimidation.
Support an independent international investigation into the charges and treatment of Mr. Khan, to ensure that his rights to a fair trial are upheld and that he is not subjected to any form of torture, inhumane treatment, or politically motivated death sentence.
Raise awareness on the global stage about the continuing suppression of political freedoms in Pakistan and the increasing threat to human rights.
Global Concern:
The Pakistani diaspora in the UK, as well as millions of concerned citizens around the world, have repeatedly expressed their outrage at the increasingly repressive actions of Pakistan’s military-led government. We are witnessing an erosion of democracy and human rights, which has profound consequences not only for the people of Pakistan but also for regional stability and global peace.
The United Kingdom, as a country with strong historical ties to Pakistan, a deep connection to the people of Pakistan through its diaspora, and a leading advocate for human rights globally, must play a central role in ensuring that justice is served.
Conclusion:
We ask the UK Government to take urgent action to ensure that the life of Mr. Imran Khan is protected and that his treatment is in line with international human rights standards. We call upon the UK to stand in solidarity with those who are suffering under political repression and to use its diplomatic influence to support the restoration of democracy, rule of law, and the protection of human rights in Pakistan.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request your immediate attention to this critical matter and urge you to take all necessary steps to prevent further harm to Mr. Imran Khan and to uphold the principles of justice and democracy in Pakistan.
