Grant Students in Ohio Schools the Right to Use Cell Phones During Free Periods and Music
The Issue
Allow me to share my personal experience. I am a student in Ohio's school system where access to personal devices, including cell phones, during school hours is restricted. This restriction, however, has led me to face inconveniences and even potential safety concerns in emergency situations where I could not reach out for immediate help.
The restriction also hampers my day-to-day activities that can be carried out efficiently and conveniently using my personal device during free periods. For instance, collaborations with fellow students on group projects or catching up on academic material can be done during these free periods using our phones.
As per statistics from the Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and 45% are online on a near-constant basis. This ubiquity of technology among youth indicates the need for our school system to adapt accordingly and allow flexibility in its usage where it does not disrupt the academic environment.
We propose to implement a policy that permits the use of cell phones during free periods and music. It is crucial to understand that the student body is not advocating for distractions, but for the right to make responsible use of technology within the school hours. This is not just an individual's petition; it's a plea from the student community that seeks to benefit from the technological advancements within the bound of ethics and discipline.
Let's make schools in Ohio more connected and flexible academic environments. Sign our petition and support our right to responsibly use cell phones during free periods and listen to music in classes.
