Grant seniors the privilege of leaving campus during school hours

The Issue

High school seniors are on the cusp of stepping into adulthood. With many being 18 years of age, they are legally considered adults capable of making responsible decisions for themselves. However, one area where their autonomy is often limited is within the confines of the school campus. It's time to address this by granting seniors the privilege to leave school grounds during study periods.

Many seniors have heavy extracurricular commitments, part-time jobs, or college preparatory classes that require flexibility in their schedules. Allowing them to leave campus can aid in balancing these commitments, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of independence and responsibility. Studies indicate that autonomy in high school students boosts engagement and motivation, facilitating a proactive approach to their education and future planning.

There's also a practical aspect to consider. Seniors frequently have doctor’s appointments, job interviews, or other urgent tasks that can't be postponed until the end of the school day. Facilitating campus departures respects their time and helps them prepare for life after high school, where time management is critical.

Several schools have successfully implemented similar policies by allowing seniors to sign out with parental permission and proper documentation, tracking attendance meticulously to ensure accountability.

Schools should provide seniors with these privileges while ensuring safety and responsibility through clear guidelines and communication with parents. By trusting our seniors with this freedom, schools can demonstrate confidence in their maturity and help cultivate responsible, independent future leaders.
