Grant QTS equivalence to EYTS qualified teachers
Grant QTS equivalence to EYTS qualified teachers
The Issue
I have dedicated myself to the profession of teaching by completing the Early Years Initial Teacher Training (EYITT) and earning the Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS). Through rigorous courses, practical teaching methods, detailed assessments, comprehensive documentation, and strategic planning, I have already demonstrated my ability to meet the prescribed teacher standards. Yet, despite my qualifications and readiness, a barrier remains: without Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), my current maintained school cannot hire me as a teacher. This is despite there being a pressing need for qualified educators like myself.
The Department for Education (DfE) in the UK currently does not recognise the EYTS as equivalent to QTS. This means, even though I possess the training and expertise to excel in a teaching role, a bureaucratic technicality is preventing schools facing teacher shortages from hiring competent professionals who are ready and eager to contribute.
The current educational landscape is experiencing a critical shortage of teachers. Schools across the UK, particularly maintained schools, are struggling to fill teaching positions with passionate, committed educators. Granting QTS equivalence to those with EYTS qualifications would be a logical step forward in remedying this shortage, ensuring that our children have access to the education and support they desperately need.
Fully recognising EYTS as equivalent to QTS would enable candidates like myself, who have demonstrated their capabilities through in-depth training and practical experience, to fill essential teaching roles immediately. This change would not only alleviate the current shortage but also provide a valuable diversification of skillsets within the education system, as EYTS holders bring a unique focus on early years development.
I urge the Department for Education to review and update their policies to reflect the current educational needs. Recognising EYTS as equivalent to QTS will empower maintained schools to hire trained and skilled staff without unnecessary delay or additional courses, which are often costly and time-consuming.
Sign this petition to support the future of our education system by allowing schools the flexibility to hire early years trained professionals now. Let’s push for a change that honours the dedication and hard work of EYTS qualified educators and meets the needs of our children.
