Grant Permit Parking for Gateway U Staff Residing in Teacher's Village
Grant Permit Parking for Gateway U Staff Residing in Teacher's Village
The Issue
Gateway U prides itself on nurturing an environment that encourages education and economic growth within our community , yet fails to extend courtesy to its staff members working within Teacher's Village. Those employees, critical to the workings of the university, are unjustly deprived of a basic right - the right to park within a reasonable distance from the educational center that we use to serve our community. We call on the city of Newark to allow permit parking within 500 feet of the building.
The current rules put these faculty members at a disadvantage compared to their neighboring colleagues. They are spending unnecessary extra time searching for spots, often several blocks away from the facility, negatively affecting their ability to perform their duties effectively and overall job satisfaction.
In a recent public survey, over 60% of academic staff nationwide expressed the view that availability of convenient parking facilities plays a significant role in their experience at the workplace (National Employment Satisfaction Survey, Academia section 2020). By providing staff with parking permits, Gateway U will be fulfilling its duty of care toward the community and contributing to a productive, harmonious work environment.
We urge the city of Newark to reconsider the current parking restrictions. Allowing staff members of Gateway U (tenants of Teacher's Village) to have permit parking in their vicinity is a step towards valuing their efforts and promoting a positive work-life balance.
