Grant November 1st a School-Free Day for ALL of Blue Valley School District

The Issue

As a resident of the Blue Valley School District community, I have observed that every year after Halloween, our classrooms often look more like ghost towns than vibrant centers of learning. Many students are absent, not because they are unwell, but because of late-night Halloween celebrations or out-of-town visits.

Last year's post-Halloween absence rate, pulled from personal accounts, suggested that several families treated November 1st as if it was already an unofficial holiday. This is supported by the fact that our elementary schools (Kindergarten through 5th Grade) already have no classes on this day, signifying the district's recognition of the problem. However, the absence of holiday provision for grades 6th to 12th exposes our older students to unnecessary pressure and fosters an environment conducive to truancy.

Beyond the personal accounts I have collected, I also note from our community conversations that at least 20 students are already planning to be absent this coming November 1st. This trend, if unchecked, could have a detrimental impact on our school district's record, creating a falsely negative impression about our commitment to education.

In light of these experiences and insights, I request that the school district grant grades 6th to 12th the day off on November 1st. This single change in our annual academic calendar could significantly reduce the number of avoidable absences post-Halloween and maintain the district's good reputation. Please sign this petition to support this proposal for a holiday on November 1st for the Blue Valley School District.
