For over a decade, a group of adorable, harmless pet goats have made a certain address in the R1 zoned area of Summerfield, FL, their home. As a longtime resident of this neighborhood, I can attest that these goats have been an integral part of our community, causing no harm to anyone. Instead, they have become a feature that many of us treasure.

However, our beloved goats are now at risk. The zoning laws do not typically allow for pet goats in R1 areas. This oversight puts the goats we want to protect at risk even though they have coexisted peacefully with us for over 10 years.

According to the American Goat Society, goats make excellent pets and are known to have a beneficial impact on the local environment, aiding in weed control and providing fertilizer with their droppings. Plus, they enrich our neighborhood with their presence and act as a reminder of our agricultural heritage.

These goats deserve to be grandfathered into our area's zoning laws, given their long and peaceful inhabitation. It's unfair to uproot them now. Most homeowners' association rules grant exceptions for long-standing non-conforming use, and we believe our officials should apply a similar principle here.

Our plea is, therefore, to our local zoning officials and governing bodies: Recognize these goats as part of our neighborhood. Update the zoning laws to accommodate these animals that have become a vital part of our community.
