Grant International Dentists the Right to Practice as Dental Hygienists in New York

The Issue

This petition was born from the personal struggle of Liliana, an orthodontist from Venezuela who sought asylum in the United States and made her new home in New York. Despite her professional credentials and experience, she has found that her skills are only recognized as equivalent to those of a dental assistant in this state. In contrast, states like Florida grant international dentists the possibility to qualify as Dental Hygienists upon passing the board exam. Unlike Florida, New York doesn't extend this opportunity to its international dentists, a policy that forces skilled practitioners like Liliana to underutilize their skills.

As such, we request the policymakers and professional regulators in New York to review and revise this policy, granting international dentists the right to sit for the Dental Hygienist board exam. This will not only empower professionals like Liliana but also help address the dental health needs of the people living in New York, through the skills and expertise of these international dentists.

The personal and professional stakes are high for affected individuals and their families. Liliana’s husband has a firmly established job in New York and her daughters are well-adapted to their environment, making another relocation impossible. This petition, therefore, is not just about professional development but also about family, community building, and making New York a home that truly values the abilities and contributions of newcomers.

We need your support to ensure talented dental professionals, like Liliana, are allowed to fully utilize their skills and provide quality dental care in their communities. Please lend your signature to empower Liliana and other international dentists in New York.
