Grant full custody of Shakaya Williams to her sister Shiniqua
The Issue
I am my sister's keeper and her biggest advocate. My sister, Shakaya Williams, a vulnerable disabled adult with cerebral palsy and has been taken from a loving family environment by our mother and placed into a facility lacking proper surveillance. Tragically, she was physically harmed by a staff member, yet our mother refuses to remove her from this perilous situation or even press charges against the individual who hurt her.
This betrayal not only harms Shakaya but puts her at risk of further potential abuse. She deserves a life full of love, safety, and family surrounding her, not confinement in a possibly unsafe facility. As her sibling, I am ready and willing to provide her the care and environment she needs and deserves, to ensure she lives with dignity and respect. My mother youngest son is already in my care full time with no assistance from his parents.
Statistics sadly show that disabled individuals are at a higher risk of abuse, especially in unsupervised care facilities. Data from reputable organizations like the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services indicates that disabled adults face a nearly three times higher risk of abuse compared to others. This shocking reality makes it even more imperative to act swiftly and deliberately.
Placing Shakaya back into an environment where she can thrive and live out her days with protection and warmth is essential. I am calling upon the court systems, social workers, and advocates for the disabled to support me in gaining full custody of Shakaya. By doing so, we can ensure her safety and well-being are prioritized.
No adult, especially one with disabilities, should have to endure the fear and uncertainty of being in a dangerous living situation. Shakaya deserves better, and together, we can make that happen.
Support this mission for her welfare and safety by signing this petition. Let us be the voice she needs when hers cannot be heard, and bring her back to the loving environment she belongs in.
