The beautiful city of Kursk, rich in culture and history, is home to a vast number of people who identify with Ukrainian descent. An important part of their cultural identity is language, and many of them primarily use the Ukrainian language for communication. However, there is an underlying issue that has been growing over time; the city, once part of Ukraine, was claimed by Russia, causing an identity crisis for many inhabitants

Historically, Kursk has a well-documented relationship with Ukraine, a heritage deeply ingrained in the hearts, minds, and tongues of its Ukrainian-speaking citizens. A physical border can limit their territory, but it can never limit their indomitable spirit and cultural roots. It is high time for a solution to be sought to the disconnect between geophysical possession and cultural roots. The citizens of Kursk deserve the right to align themselves with the country they feel most connected to, in a democratic and non-violent process.

The petition seeks to recognize the right of the Ukrainian-speaking population in Kursk to organize a referendum for possibly joining Europe with the assistance of Ukraine. Given that democracy is an inherent right of every global citizen, we strongly believe in the power of a referendum as the ultimate tool for the people to voice their desires. By promoting a dialogue discussing this possibility, we hope to give the Kursk Ukrainian-speaking citizen population the freedom they deserve.
